The FBI arrested Miami Heat player Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups as part of a large-scale investigation into illegal sports betting. The arrests took place on the morning of October 23, 2025. According to the Associated Press, both were taken in for questioning, but specific charges have not yet been disclosed.
According to ESPN, the case is related to a federal investigation into sports betting involving active NBA players and coaches. ESPN sources note that Rozier is part of the same group of suspects previously implicated in six other cases, including brokers from unlicensed bookmaking networks.
According to CBS Sports, the FBI is investigating the circumstances surrounding a Charlotte Hornets game on March 23, 2023, when Rozier, playing for his former team, abruptly left the court after nine minutes of play. It was around this game that a series of anomalous bets were recorded. The league previously investigated this incident in 2023, but found no violations.
As for Billups, according to ABC News, his arrest may be connected to an investigation into an illegal poker ring with ties to organized crime. It is not yet clear whether this relates directly to the coach’s activities in the NBA or his personal contacts outside the league.
As the NY Post notes, prosecutors and FBI Director Cash Patel will announce further details about the alleged schemes at a press conference on Thursday at 5:00 PM Moscow time. The NBA and its teams are currently refraining from comment.
